Dear Parents,
Thank you for visiting our class blog today! We've had a wonderful first week of third grade in room 315! We are working on establishing rules and routines and all the students are falling right into step. Check out below to see what we've been doing in each subject area and look over all the resources available to you here. I update every Friday and will send out a quick email when it's ready for you to view...
Reading: We read the chapter book The Hero of Third Grade. We talked about the plot, the characters and their character traits, and connections to what we are learning about being in third grade. We also began learning about our independent reading routine. We made an anchor chart and discussed what a good reader looks like. Our class is working on building READING STAMINA. We've built up this week to a full 30 minutes of independent reading. Independent reading is key in developing a strong vocabulary, understanding more challenging themes, and learning to love books. In one week, we will begin reading Stone Fox. You may wish to purchase this book for your child to have his/her own copy for reading assignments. I do have several copies in the classroom for students to use while in class.
Writing: We wrote about a summer memory as a pre-writing sample. We'll begin learning about narrative writing next week.
Math: We reviewed the second grade skills associated with place value, but extended to larger numbers. We talked about the many ways to represent numbers. We also learned about NUMBER TALKS and how we'll begin our math lesson each day discussing efficient ways to do mental math. We started our daily routine of solving a word problem every day during morning work time. Each student will have a problem solving notebook that we will discuss each day. This daily work will get your child prepared for solving real-world problems. Also this week, we learned to play several card and dice games to practice our math facts.
Social Studies: We are learning about the 5 habits of happy kids, which is the foundation of our classroom community. So far, we have learned about the following HABITS that happy and successful children incorporate into their lives; Be Proactive, Put First Things First, Begin With the End in Mind, and Think Win-Win. We are working through a chapter book that illustrates these behaviors. The students are working in small groups to complete activities designed to get them talking about these habits.
Class News and Reminders...
Remember OPEN HOUSE is Thursday at 6:30. I would love to see at least one parent from each family attend. Third grade is a very important year and I have lots of information that will help us have a successful year. Please find other arrangements for your child on this night for space considerations as well as the conversations we'll be having.
I have enough folders for each child to take one to Spanish class. There is no need to send another.
Please make sure to return all forms from the Cobb County folder that came home on Monday.
The ice cream social is Friday night at 6:30. Yogli Mogli will be served...a favorite in our house since our daughter works there! You can meet her if you come up to Kemp on August 5th!
Dinner Conversation Starters...
Do you ever ask your child "What did you do today?" and get "NOTHING"...Well I can assure you we never do NOTHING. Here is a way for you to get more out of conversations with your child. I will provide specific topics for you to ask your child about to get the back and forth dialogue going.
*Ask your child who the Scarlet Pimpernel is and what he does.
*Ask your child about the silent short film with the cave man trying to get the egg. What habit did he learn to use in the end?
*Ask your child how many class dojo points he/she earned this week and what those points were given for. (You'll learn all about Class Dojo at Open House!)
*Where did your child go for our very first FUN FRIDAY? What were the activity choices?
*What is our morning work routine and what is P.O.D? What is the A.C.E. strategy for solving word problems.
Hopefully this section will help you be a part of our classroom!
