Check out what we've done this week in class!
Phonics/Grammar: We learned the spelling rule for the plural form of words ending in s, x, sh, ch, and e. We also reviewed hard to spell and commonly misspelled words (some will be added to next week's word list). We took our assessment today, which contained a spelling test, making words plural section, and sentence writing section.
Reading: We read several chapters in our book club selections (Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, Sideways Stories From Wayside School, or Third Grade Angels). We worked to identify character traits with supporting text evidence. We also read a short passage called "Buttons and the Blue Glove" and talked about good reading strategies to use when answering multiple choice questions and short answer questions. We discussed the importance of referring back to the text, and not just forming our own opinions or guessing.
Writing: We learned a new strategy for brainstorming narrative ideas (thinking of a special place, sketching it, listing small moments that happened there). We learned how to make a "flash draft" as an organizational tool to help us write a more sequential and focused story. Flash drafting is when we write short phrases at the top of each page of a writing booklet that remind us of the order of the story.
Math: We began our unit on multiplication and division strategies. We looked at the skill of skip-counting and used that to first discuss multiplying by 5's and 10's. We learned what each factor in an equation represents and how we can make equal groups to solve an equation. We then looked at the inverse operation, division. We learned how multiplication and division are related. We completed number talks each day, sharpening our mental math skills. We also solved and discussed a word problem every day, using the ACE strategy to analyze, compute, and explain our answers.
Science: We completed our unit on Rocks and Minerals. We learned about the rock cycle and how forces can change one rock type to another. A small group visited the Innovation Lab and learned how to use Aurasma to create a visual showing the rock cycle. We completed and presented our posters on the types of rocks, incorporating important nonfiction text features to help our peers learn the information.
