April 23 Update...

Two more days of testing!  We finished our English/Language Arts sections of the Milestone and we'll be working on Math Monday and Tuesday.  I'm very proud of the students' hard work and desire to do their best each day.  I can't wait to see how they do! Check out below to see what else we've been doing in room 315...

Phonics/Grammar:  We focused on correct punctuation and capitalization rules when writing. We reviewed parts of speech, types of sentences, and how to correctly punctuate dialogue.

Reading:  We began our new chapter book, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.  We closely studied the main characters' traits that would describe their actions and thoughts. We discussed the symbolism that Kate DiCamillo is using in the novel.  We did several "close readings" to determine the meaning of challenging words and phrases.  We also read in our book club books and met in small groups to read poetry and discuss the figurative language used.

Math:  We reviewed the correct way to answer a constructed response question.  We looked at word problems and determined the operation or operations needed to solve them.  We also reviewed three digit addition and subtraction, two digit multiplication, and division with larger numbers.

Content:  We learned about Cesar Chavez and his work to improve conditions for migrant workers. We discussed all the historical figures we've studied this year and discussed similarities in their causes.  The "WAX MUSEUM" project was discussed. Your child brought home a paper last week with the instructions. The bottom section needs to be filled out and returned early this week. Please discuss with your child the figure he/she would like to be.  Your help will be needed in making the costume for the wax museum.

Class News and Announcements:

Thank you to all the parents who donated items for our daily testing rewards!  The kids have been so excited to see what the surprise is every day.

Make sure to discuss the WAX MUSEUM with your child and return the bottom portion of the sheet.

The Art Show is May 2 from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. Please come to the "art gallery" in the gym to see your child's masterpiece! The cost to take home the picture is $30.

The Spring Fling is April 28th from 6pm to 9pm.

Our Field Day is May 10th. All are welcome and encouraged to attend!  It's such a fun day for the kids, come out and join us!  I'm hoping we can pull out a win at tug-o-war!  Our competitive nature should come in handy for this event!

Don't forget May 23rd and May 24th are Early Release days.

Our end  of the year party will be picnic style dinner followed by a game of kickball...kids versus parents!  The class literally plays every single day at recess, so I'm hoping we can show off our skills that day. Of course, I will be playing on the kids team!  Come prepared to kick and run!
