September 15, 2017 Update...

Thank you for visiting today.  Be sure to read all  the way to the end of  the Class News to stay informed about schedule changes during testing next week.  We've had an awesome week. I seriously thank God every day for this class. They are AMAZING and I really mean it when I say they are the BEST class ever! Check out below to find out what we've been doing in our fabulous classroom...

Reading:  We read several more chapters in The White Giraffe and learned what is needed when summarizing a chapter. We wrote detailed, but to-the-point summaries about chapter 15.  We discussed the difference between a summary and a retelling.  We learned how to "read" informational passages and how this type of reading is different from when we read narratives.  We learned to sit up and get our brains "revved up" and ready to learn new information. We learned that we need to stop after each paragraph when our brain is full of new information and restate what we just learned in our own words to check for comprehension. We learned how to locate the main ideas and key details from each paragraph by using a strategy called "Boxes and Bullets" (basically it's an outline of the passage). We also learned how important it is to pay attention to content related vocabulary.  We used two different American Indian passages to practice this.

Math:  We learned how to determine  if an equation is BALANCED and if it isn't, how to make it balanced.  We learned that the equal sign doesn't mean "put the answer here", but it means that what is on both sides of the equal sign must have the same value.  This value can be written in many different ways (example: 3x6=10+8).  We continued our discussion on the relationship between multiplication and division. We discussed fact families in great detail and we worked in small groups to gain a deeper understanding of factors, products, dividends, divisors, and quotients.  We did some serious BRAIN work this week to deepen our understanding of these two operations.  We took an assessment on Friday to show our progress in this area (please check your child's scores on both the spiraled morning work  and the Friday Check so you are informed on his/her progress).  Two step word problems continue to be a focus...Extra practice at home is always a good thing!

Social Studies:  We began studying specific tribes that inhabit the various regions; the Inuit, the Pawnee, the Nez Perce, and the Kwakuitl). We discussed the project and reviewed the rubric.

Dinner Conversation Starters...

*Ask your child to teach you how to play "TARGET 300". All you need are two die!
*Ask your child what is going on in the book The White Giraffe
*Ask your child how the IOWA test is going
*Ask your child what the difference is between reading a chapter book and reading an informational passage
*Give your child a number and ask them to tell you all the multiplication equations he/she can think of that give you that product for an answer

Class News...

Thank you Mrs. Newlin for supplying our class with testing treats every day!  Because of her generosity, we've been able to enjoy mints, sweet tarts, and smarties if our brains need a boost during testing.

We will be on a testing schedule next Monday and Tuesday. This means our lunch will be early at 11:40. Our normal schedule will resume on Wednesday.

Unfortunately our Tellus field trip had to be rescheduled due to testing being pushed back.  I will need a new permission slip for the new dates.  Be  on the lookout next week for this to come home. Also, if you haven't paid, please consider sending in what you can.  We are over $500 short in donations.

Fall Break begins next Monday, September 25!  Enjoy the week!

If you haven't yet chosen your parent-teacher conference day and time, please do so by Sept. 19. After this date, the sign-up genius  link will be deactivated and I will assign a time.  Reminder letters will  come home after Fall Break.
