October 6, 2017

Thanks for visiting today. I have enjoyed seeing all of the amazing American  Indian  tribe projects this week.  Today, we just ran out of time and couldn't squeeze in the rest of the presentations. Those who didn't present this week will go on Monday.  I know they are all excited to share what they've created!  Check out below  to see what we've been focusing on this week...

Phonics/Grammar: We learned the meaning of ten sets of homophones.  We practiced using a dictionary to find the definitions of the words and we worked in pairs to write and illustrate the homophones.  We took our test on Friday. We looked at the correct way to punctuate dialogue when we edited our final narratives.

Reading:  We compared and contrasted several fables. We focused on identifying the important characters and character traits, conflicts, and morals in these short stories.  Each student also retook the Reading Inventory. Results will be shared at our conference.  The students chose their next book club selections, which they are so excited about.  Please make sure your child is in a chapter book at home as well! The only way any child will become a better reader to to READ every day!

Writing: This week, we worked through the writing process one final time and practiced all the amazing techniques we've learned from our mentor authors.  I conferenced with each student and went over their previous narrative and rubric. I also modeled a few more personal narratives, showing strategies such as beginning with an intriguing lead, stretching out the heart of the story, inserting dialogue in places to make a special impact, and closing the story by bringing the reader back to my heart of the story.

Math:  We focused on solving for unknowns in multiplication and division problems.  We used number bonds to help us see the very important relationship between the three numbers in an equation and what steps we need to follow to find the value of the missing number. We worked in small groups to balance equations. There was some serious problem solving and higher level thinking going on in math this week!

Social Studies:  We listened and learned about all the amazing tribes that were highlighted in the students' projects.

Health:  A trainer from Wellstar joined our class and we learned about making healthy food choices.  We read the nutrition labels and played a game to emphasize healthy eating.

Class Announcements...

Welcome Tessa Dilday and her family to our class!  We are so glad to have Tessa in our class. We've enjoyed getting to know her this week.

If  you have not yet returned the New Echota field trip permission slip and money, please do so as soon as possible.  That trip will be here before we know it!

We will have an Early Release day next Thursday, October 12th.  Dismissal will begin at 12:30.

STEM night will be at Kemp Thursday, October 12th as well.  Plan to join us for a night of FUN! I'll be there and would love to see everyone come out.

Students need to start the process of memorizing their math facts!  I've assigned x2's for next week and we will take our first timed test next Friday.  Students will move on at their own pace after each math fact set is mastered.  Usually about 10 minutes of studying per night is enough to ace the timed test.
