February 2, 2018 Update...

We've had a great week in our classroom.  Believe it or not, we are halfway through the third quarter.  Academic Alerts will be coming home next Friday if your child in in danger of receiving a "1" in any area of the report card. If you do not receive an alert, your child is progressing towards or meeting all third grade standards. Don't forget about our grade level website!  This is where you can find all the standards that are taught in third grade. Check out below to find out what we've been working on this week...

Grammar/Spelling: This week, we focused on the role of adverbs in sentences. We learned that they describe the verb by telling HOW, WHEN, and WHERE the action occurred.  We sorted words by the type of adverb they were, we wrote some sentences with adverbs, and we took a test on Friday.

Reading/Writing:  We completed our novel, Because of Winn-Dixie.  We learned how to write an extended response question that fully answers a writing prompt.  We wrote about who we thought the most important secondary character was to Opal and why we believed that.  We also wrote about the theme that was woven through the story, supported by evidence from the text.  We looked closely at the rubric we will be graded with on the Georgia  Milestone Assessment and discussed what we need to include when writing.  We worked in small groups on shorter passages on our Lexile level.

Math:  We continued our work with fractions, extending our topic to comparing fractions and making equivalent fractions. This has been a bit challenging for some in our class. It's hard to take the concrete idea of fractions and really be able to visualize it abstractly. We worked  through our Conceptua lesson, utilizing the online manipulatives to help us.  We worked  in small groups learning the relationship between fractions of a shape and fractions on a number line.  We took several quizzes on fractions and completed our county Touchstone Assessments.

Science: We presented our habitat projects and learned so much from each other!

Dinner Conversation Starters...

*Ask your child what they think the theme of Because of Winn-Dixie was and why.
*Ask your child who the most interesting character from the novel was and why.
*Have your child name five other fractions that are equivalent to 1/2.
*Ask your child what it means to "pay it forward".

Class News...

Thank you Mrs. Morling and Mrs. Olson for leading our small reading groups this week!

Make sure your child is taking the USA Test Prep assignments seriously and completing them to the best of their ability.  This is an excellent resource to help your child prepare for the End-of-Grade testing.  This will also help you determine what your child needs additional practice with before the assessment.

If you haven't yet purchased The Magician's Elephant, please do so before Monday. It should be available at Barnes and Noble.
