August 17, 2018 Update...

Thanks for visiting today! We are settling into our routine nicely and beginning to move on to more challenging concepts and skills.  Check out below to see what we've been doing in class.

Phonics/Grammar:  We practiced words with harder blends in spelling.  We learned what the word "ambition" means and how to use it correctly. We also continued our study of nouns; learning what abstract and concrete nouns are.  We created a flipbook to help us list and identify nouns.

Reading: We completed our first novel study on Stone Fox.  We learned how to identify cause and effect relationships in novels and completed a page in small group time.  We did a close reading to help increase our vocabulary and to practice this great comprehension strategy.  We read in our independent books, building our reading stamina.  We'll begin our new novel, The White Giraffe, on Monday!

Writing: We learned how to narrow our personal narrative topics and write more focused stories.  We looked at our mentor authors and began writing our own "SEED" stories.  Some children were writing "watermelon" stories, which are more of a list of events rather than a detailed small moment.

Math: We wrapped up our unit on place value  and rounding and have moved on to our review of addition and subtraction with regrouping.  This skill should be familiar to your child and an extension of what they covered in 2nd grade.  We will be moving on rather quickly to multiplication.  If you notice that addition and subtraction is a struggle for your child, I would suggest practicing simple math fact memorization.

Science:  We began our unit on Rocks and Minerals and learned how geologists classify rocks.

Class News and  Announcements...
