October 5th Update...

Thanks for visiting today!  Check out below to see what we've been doing this week...

Grammar/Phonics:  Our spellings words this week consisted of another group of contractions.  We also created an anchor chart listing the common capitalization rules. We worked with a partner to hunt for sentences showing these rules in our book club books, then we wrote our sentences on strips and sorted them.  We took our spelling test on Friday.  We will have a test on capitalization rules next week.

Reading:  We read several chapters in The White GiraffeWe used visualization when reading about Jemmy's secret sanctuary and we drew illustrations of this part of the book.  We read a book called Raising Dragons.  We completed a close reading where we studied the challenging vocabulary to increase our reading ability.  We also dove deep into the book and looked at the characters' internal motivations and we used context clues to look for hidden meaning within the book. We then completed a writing assignment where we wrote a letter to one of the main characters from the perspective of another character.  We tried to be consistent with the language, setting details, and plot sequence that the author used in the book when we wrote this letter.  We took our quarter one county assessment, which will be shared with you at our conference.  We took several other end of quarter assessments to show what we've learned so far this year. We also learned about a new website we will be using in class called READ THEORY. This is a site with leveled passages and questions. The students read and answer comprehension questions to earn points.

Math:  We continued our discussion of the distributive property of multiplication.  We use this strategy to solve problems with larger numbers.  We also looked at the idea of sharing vs. grouping when discussing division word problems to help us understand exactly how to analyze these types of problems.  We took our quarter one county assessment, which will also be shared with you at our conference.  We reviewed skills such as addition and subtraction with regrouping.  We used our math magician site (linked on this blog at the bottom of page) to begin working on memorization of math facts.

Content:  We loved visiting Tellus on Tuesday, which was an amazing culminating activity for our rocks and minerals unit.  We had an amazing time visiting the mineral gallery, learning about the Apatosaurus skeleton that is on display at Tellus, we went to the mineral lab and used the various properties to identify samples, and we got to see what it was like to mine for gems many years ago.  Thank you to all the parents who met us there, and thank you to Mrs. Grayson and Mrs. Mize for being our chaperones!

Class News and Announcements...

Jump Rope for Heart is Monday. Please make sure your child wears appropriate attire for this activity. We will be "jumping" in the bus port during our normal specials time; 10:00-10:50.  You are welcome to come and join in on this activity with us!

Quarter one report cards will be given to you at our parent-teacher conference.  The official end of the quarter is next Wednesday.

We have an Early Release Day this Thursday, October 11.  Please make any necessary transportation changes in writing.

We will also be on an early release schedule the entire week of October 15th for conferences.
