Only ONE more week until Christmas Break!!!! Well, we are all eagerly waiting for the bearded fellow, but we have lots of important quarter 2 assessments that we've been taking this week. Some of these assessments are coming home in your child's folder, and some are county assessments and will not be sent home. If your child mentions the "Touchstone" for ELA or Math, these do not calculate into grades, but I do look at this to help me determine what your child is excelling in and what may be a weakness. I am also administering the Reading Inventory and you will see your child's new score along with a report when grades come out. Check out below to see what else we've been doing this week...
Phonics/Grammar: We learned two common prefixes (dis- and mis-) and how these prefixes change the meaning of the root word. We also revisited how to correctly write sentences that contain dialogue.
Reading: We took our quarter two ELA Touchstone Assessment. We finished The One and Only Ivan. We read several nonfiction passages on gorillas to gather research and created outlines with the main ideas and details. We read a passage on Jane Goodall and her work with primates, and then took a reading comprehension test. We got our new chapter books for our next round of book clubs.
Writing: We looked at several texts to examine various strategies for writing informational books. We began writing our chapter on the appearance of gorillas, focusing on beginning with a topic sentence, organizing our ideas into paragraphs with appropriate subheadings, and writing a conclusion sentence. We did the same thing later in the week with the chapter on gorilla behavior.
Math: We began our unit on interpreting data. We learned the important parts of a bar graph, how to take a poll and record our results, then use that data to make a bar graph. We took a final assessment on area and problem solving involving all four operations.
Science: We learned about how FOSSILS are formed, the various types of fossils (cast, amber, mold, and trace), and what paleontologists learn from fossils.
Class News and Announcements...
Don't forget to send in a WRAPPED 650-850 Lexile leveled chapter book with your child's name written on the outside for our book exchange. You can send it as soon as you can and I'll keep it safe in the classroom until our exchange.
Congratulations to Will Land for being chosen as our Terrific Kid this week! He displays great character traits that we can all look up to!
Has your child come up with a Science Fair project yet? If you answered NO, have you visited Mrs. Youngs' blog? She has tons of ideas and examples if your child is struggling to get started. Don't forget, I REALLY want 100% of our class participating in this event.
Our Holiday Party is next Thursday at 8:45ish. Please come join us for a fun day!
Remember, Thursday and Friday are Early Release days, so we will have a different lunch time.
