Hi Parents,
I hope you have fun plans for this beautiful long weekend! Wednesday of next week begins our Fall testing battery. We will begin with the CoGAT followed by the ITBS the following week. Please make sure your child is on time to school on testing days. I don't want anyone to have to take make-ups if we can avoid this. Check out below to find out what we did in class this week...
Phonics/Grammar: We studied more long vowel sound spelling patterns. We created a web diagram with all of our patterns. We continued our study of nouns. We took a dictation test on Friday.
Reading: We read the book Pinduli and talked about character traits and text evidence. We also completed a "close read" with this book, using decoding strategies to increase our vocabulary and to help us better understand the story. We read several chapters in Wayside Stories and applied what we learned about character traits and text evidence to the characters in this book. We wrote in our Reading Response Journals. We worked in small groups to improve our oral reading fluency.
Writing: We looked closely at our narratives and identified the "heart" of our stories. Some of us came to the realization that we were only writing a sequential list of events, and not a true "small moment" so we began a new story. We continued to develop our idea into a personal narrative.
Math: We finished up our unit on addition and subtraction with regrouping and took an assessment (it's in your child's agenda). We worked on application of this skill in word problems. We also practiced using our A.C.E. strategy to carefully Analyze, Compute, and Explain our work when solving word problems. We worked hard on mastering our single-digit addition facts. Keep practicing at home! Everyone finished taking the Math Inventory. Your child's report is in his/her agenda. Please let me know if you have any questions. Keep in mind, this is a "pretest" and the material on this assessment is what we will learn this year. I expect to see lots of growth. We will take the assessment again in December.
Science: We continued our study of SOIL, learning about the three main types of soil; sand, silt, clay. We learned about each type.
Announcements...
No school on Monday! Enjoy the long weekend!
Congratulations to Reese Gifford, for being chosen as our Terrific Kid! Way to go Reese!
Be on the lookout for information on a special field trip our class will be taking. I will be part of a Handprint Unveiling Ceremony in the Marietta Square on October 8 and CCSD has invited my class to attend. It will be during the school day and county transportation will be provided. More info to come next week!
We are halfway through the first quarter, and I will be updating ParentVue with your child's progress. If your child is progressing towards or meeting all standards that have been introduced at this point, then there will not be any grades visible. If your child is in danger of receiving a "1" in any area, you will see that indicated for that standard. I will also be calling to talk to the parents of any child who is in this situation. The ParentVue progress report will be available online Wednesday afternoon.
