September 13, 2019

Hi Parents,
Thank you for checking out the blog today!  We are so glad to be finished with our testing.  I'll send home scores as soon as we get them.  Check out below to see what we've done this week...

Grammar/Phonics:  We learned about regular and irregular plurals and the spelling patterns related to these words.  We also discussed the conventions that need to be applied when writing a paragraph, such as indenting, capitalizing titles, and writing in complete sentences.

Writing:  This week, we learned how to write a constructed response, which is writing that answers a question about a story or passage.  We learned how to first look closely at the prompt (it will always have more than one part), how to plan out our writing, and then how to make sure we are including text evidence in our response.  We also learned how to write an informational paragraph on one topic.

Math:  We continued our work with multiplication and division, learning many strategies to apply.  We've learned how to make equal groups, draw an array, use repeated addition, and use skip counting. We've discussed the relationship between multiplication and division. We also talked about multiplication and division fact families.  We used manipulatives to make models of equations.  We worked in small group on addition and subtraction remediation for those needing it.

Reading:  We read several chapters in Wayside Stories and wrote in our Reading Response Journals.  We discussed character traits and text evidence.  We worked on oral reading fluency in our chapter books, and we worked on reading Frye Phrases in order to increase our speed. When this occurs, better comprehension follows.  We read several short passages and practiced how to answer questions in complete sentences and referring back to the text for our answers.

Class News...

Thank you for those who have sent in prize box donations!!!  We are so grateful!

Fall Break begins on September 23. Please encourage your child to keep up with his or her reading!

A field trip form for the Cobb County Parks and Recreation is coming home today. This is a series of three in-house field trips and two off-site trips.  I know we've collected a lot of money these past few weeks. I promise, after this there shouldn't be any additional requests for a while.

Our two chaperones for Tellus will be Mrs. Parish and Mrs. McClure.  There were so many parents who offered to help us, I just picked out two forms from the stack randomly.  All other parents are more than welcome to meet us at Tellus. The fee is less than regular admission, and you can pay on  the day of the field trip at the door.  We will be eating lunch at Tellus, so if you plan on joining us, bring one also.  I will have a sign-out sheet for anyone wanting to take their child home from the event.
