September 23 Update...

Good Afternoon Parents,
Thank you for checking out our CLASSROOM happenings before beginning the Fall break.  We ended with an amazing day, thanks to all the parents who donated items or time!  The students had a blast and it was such a great way to end our Greece unit.  It was also perfect timing, since we needed a good fun day after 8 days of testing.  Check out to see what we did this week....

Phonics/Grammar:  We met in small groups to edit our Greece informational books, focusing on writing complete sentences with proper punctuation and capitalization.  We also studied commonly misspelled words this week and took an assessment on Friday.

Writing:  We learned about important nonfiction text features, such as headings, captions, labels, and bold words. We began an informational book on Greece and completed two pages; one on architectural influences and one on the early Olympic games.

Reading:  We read several chapters in Lemonade War. We looked closely at characters' dialogue as text evidence for character traits.  We completed a close reading to help us understand challenging vocabulary.  We learned how to summarize a chapter.  We worked in small groups on challenging passages and a focus question, which helped us narrow in on finding text evidence to support an opinion.  We also learned about the types of clues authors can use to help us figure out unfamiliar vocabulary; synonyms, antonyms, examples, lists, or context clues.  We took an assessment on decoding unfamiliar words.

Math:  We compared multiplication and division. We looked closely at word problems containing these two operations and talked about ways to figure out which operation to use.  We also discussed strategies for solving multi-step word problems and steps that will make sure we don't forget important information.  We took two math assessments this week; one on mult/div and one on two-step word problems.

Social Studies: We concluded our Greece unit with a fun day of rotations today. We made laurel wreaths like the athletes would win. We used the three types of columns to make a Greek building. We played a game to review the roots of Democracy and compare our countries.  We also made a Venn  diagram, comparing the ancient Olympics to  the modern day games. We went outside and did a foot race, long jump and discus throw with the other third grade classes. Then we came inside and enjoyed Greek foods.

Class News...

Thank you to Mrs. Lewald, Mrs. Collins, Mrs. Abrams, Mrs. Gohlke, and Mrs. VanGelder for running the Greece stations today!

Kuddos to our kiddos!  We were recognized today for being the class with the BEST lunchroom behavior. We got Popsicles today at lunch for our reward.

Our Tellus Field trip will be Wednesday, October 5th. Everyone in our class has paid.

If you haven't yet signed up for a conference time, please email me. The sign-up genius has been taken down. I'll be sending reminder letters home next week.
