October 14 Update...

Thank you for visiting today.  We have had a great week. Our STEM project has gotten our class motivated to learn how to make a profit when designing and selling a product.  Read below to see what else we've done this week in class...

Phonics/Grammar:  We learned about the phonics rule that applies to verbs ending in -y.  We are continuing to learn how to form singular and plural possessive nouns.  We are also focusing heavily on applying these phonics, spelling and grammar rules to our narrative writing.

Reading: We finished The Lemonade War today, wrapping up our 2nd novel study.  We worked in small groups to practice our oral reading fluency, using text evidence to support character's traits and motivations, and writing argumentative responses to support an opinion about a text.  We took a benchmark exam (Touchtone) on our quarter 1 reading standards, which will be shared at our conference.  We practiced reading some challenging sight words lists (fifth and sixth grade sight words).

Math:  We focused heavily on learning multiplication properties and how these properties help us further understand multiplication and division.  We also continued to review solving for unknowns.  We took a benchmark assessment on multiplication and division. We practiced our multiplication fact fluency on x2's and x5s. Ella is our class champion as of right now!

Writing:  We wrote a narrative about our favorite rotation at Tellus. We wrote "flash drafts" to organize our thoughts.  We focused on important components of  a story such as including dialogue, transitioning from one event to the next, writing a catchy lead, and closing our story appropriately. We also worked on applying conventions to help our audience when reading the story.

Social Studies:  We learned all about profits and losses as we kicked off our STEM unit.  We figured out the cost of one cup of lemonade by doing some amazing math, then we discussed all the steps required when trying to determine the price to charge for goods .  We designed our product, figured out the cost to produce one, bought materials, and made the product. We also make a sign for our store front.

Class News and Announcements...

Thank you to Mrs. Wells and Mrs. VanGelder for chaperoning our field trip last week.  And thank you to all the other parents who joined us at the museum. We had a great trip!

I can't wait to talk to each of you next week at our parent-teacher conference.  Please let me know if you are running late or have to reschedule for some reason. We are only allotted 20 minutes per conference, so we are on a very tight schedule.

Early dismissal is next week, beginning at 12:15. If you have any dismissal changes, please send a note in with your child or call the front office.
