Phonics/Grammar: We reviewed the function of verbs. We practiced our spelling pattern for doubling the final letter before adding -ing and the pattern for just adding -ing. We also worked on application of capitalization and punctuation during creative writing at morning work time.
Reading: We began a nonfiction book called Gorillas, focusing on the text features that authors of expository texts use. We learned some great comprehension strategies that we can use when reading nonfiction, such as stopping after each section and restating the information in our own words. We learned how to create "boxes and bullets", which is an outline listing main ideas and details. We worked in small groups with narrative stories, comparing the reading strategies we use for this type of text compared to nonfiction texts. We worked in our book clubs to write chapter summaries and make character trait/evidence charts.
Writing: We began our unit on Expository Writing (informational). We looked at several authors and what they did to help their audience understand the topic fully. We discussed ways to brainstorm ideas for informational chapter books (what are you an EXPERT on?) We learned how to organize our ideas into sections. We began writing our expository texts.
Math: We completed our unit on Area. We learned how repeated addition, multiplication, and division all relate to finding area. We learned how to find the length of a missing side when given the area and one side length. We also looked at word problems containing area information. We practiced our math facts, focusing on x2's and getting used to the timed quizzes. Check your child's folder for the x2 test. Some students will be repeating this test next Friday and some will be moving on to x3's.
Science: We began our unit on Weathering and Erosion. We learned that weathering is the breaking down of rock into smaller pieces and Erosion is the movement of those smaller pieces. We discussed all the forces that cause weathering and erosion.
Class News...
Congratulations to Ella! She has maintained her reign as Math Facts Champion! Many challenged her, but none knocked her out of the first place spot...
Thank you to Mrs. Abrams for supplying us with treats for Monday's fall activities (these are academic activities, no Halloween party on Monday).
Encourage your child to study multiplication facts nightly. It's apparent who is devoting this time on a nightly basis and who is not. One request of our FOURTH grade teachers is that our third graders master their facts. Please help your child succeed with this task.
We enjoyed our visit from the Cobb County Police Department's K-9 unit. We met Roddy and Ruger and watched how they work.
Monday is Pajama Day to support United Way. Your child may participate if he/she sends in a $1 donation.
I'm so proud of our AREA TOUCHSTONE scores! Our class average was 96% on finding area and 90% on solving word problems involving area. Way to go class!
We got a huge compliment from Mrs. Johnson this week regarding our math constructed responses that are hanging in the hall. She was amazed at our explanations!
