Hi parents! Thanks for visiting today to stay informed about your child's week. We have two and a half weeks until our Holiday break. We have a lot to learn as the quarter winds down. Try to talk to your child about the importance of completing homework, studying those math facts, and reading nightly! We want to finish the year strong! Check out below to see what we've been focusing on this week...
Phonics/Grammar: We learned about suffixes (-ly, -ful, -less). We talked about how we can use the meaning of the suffix to determine the new meaning of the word. In writing, we conferenced about editing to check for correct capitalization and punctuation.
Reading: We read more in our chapter book The One and Only Ivan. We completed a close reading to determine the meaning of unknown words and phrases, which in turn, helped us better understand the passage. We read in our book club selections and wrote about the main character and the character traits that describe them best. We read several nonfiction passages, practicing stopping and jotting to rephrase the material we just learned.
Writing: We created graphic organizers on all three of our historical figures that we've learned about this quarter (Revere, Douglass, Anthony). Each student chose who they wanted to write about. We created a cover, table of contents with the subheadings we'll be using in our book, and began writing about the early years of the person in our biography. We'll continue the other sections of our book next week, as well as focusing on adding nonfiction text features to help our audience better understand our person.
Social Studies: See above; reviewing our historical figures.
Math: We continued our work with multi-step word problems. We worked with three digit equations and wrote our own story problems, making sure the key words matched our operation. We took several quizzes on this skill. This skill will not be graded on the report card this quarter, but we are beginning our work with solving these types of problems because of the difficulty. I am still assessing and grading to keep you informed as to how your child is coming along in this area, but you will not see a grade for this until the 3rd quarter.
Class News...
Please remember to send in 21 identical items for the stockings! We began last Friday and the kids were so excited to get their prize. They also all worked so hard, exhibiting great behavior! A little extra motivation is all it takes sometimes to stay on track.
A big thank you goes out to Carter Rose and Ella Fiakpornoo for their work on Student Council. They are representing our class very well!
Remember our holiday party is on December 21 at 12:30. All are invited, it's going to be a blast!
