Happy Friday the 13th! Well, our start to 2017 has been eventful. We are going to be glad to get back to a normal routine next week. If you haven't done so already, please return the large report card envelope with your signature on the 2nd nine week's line. If you have any questions or concerns about the upcoming quarter, please let me know.
Here's what we've done this week (although it was very short!)...
Phonics/Grammar: We began discussing the role of adjectives in writing. We also studied the ou/ow/oi spelling pattern.
Reading: We began our author study on Patricia Polacco. We read Chicken Sunday, Thank You, Mr. Falkner, and Junkyard Wonders then compared and contrasted story elements. We also met in small groups to read leveled passages and used text evidence to answer questions. We read several chapters in our new novels and wrote in our reading journals about the main characters and their traits.
Math: We began our unit on fractions. We learned that fractions must be equal parts and that the top number in a fraction is called the numerator and the bottom number is called the denominator. We played a dice game that practiced making fractions with shapes. We also worked through three conceptua math lessons, utilizing the smart board to learn about fractions.
Science: We began our unit on the 5 Habitats in Georgia. We learned about the Mountain, Piedmont, Coastal Plain, Swamp and Marsh, and Atlantic habitats and what plants and animals animals are predominant in these areas.
Class News and Announcements...
I wanted to thank Mrs. Abrams one more time for her planning and organizing of our holiday party! The kids had an amazing time! THANK YOU!
Don't forget to encourage your child to begin planning the habitats project. Several have asked if they can present a PowerPoint. I've said that this is okay, but I would like them to also print the slides so we can display their work for the others to be able to use as a resource in the classroom.
Market Day information is coming home today! I have gone over the requirements with the students. This is a great unit we do in third grade to teach our students about economics in the real world.
There will be no school on Monday in observance of MLK Day!
