January 27 Update...

Hi Parents!  Check out what we've done this week in class!

Phonics/Grammar:  We continued practicing the editing process with our daily paragraphs.  We learned  what comparative and superlative  adjectives are and the spelling rules that accompany these adjectives.

Reading:  We read several more Patricia Polacco books and continued our author study, focusing specifically on theme.  We learned how to write an extended response that uses text evidence to prove what we think the theme of the story was.  We read Ginger and Petunia and Rotten Ritchie and the Ultimate Dare. We created a list of events from the stories that reinforced the message of "Be Yourself", then  we wrote two well developed paragraphs supporting our theme. We read in our book club selections and met with our group to discuss plot. We worked in small groups with passages on our level. We completed a close reading on Ginger and Petunia, developing our vocabulary acquisition (prodigies/social obligations/donned/curator) by using context clues.

Writing: We added nonfiction text features to our informational Habitats books, edited and revised one-on-one.

Science:  In addition to finishing our Habitats informational books, we presented our Georgia Poster projects.  Overall,  the students did an amazing job with teaching their peers about the habitats.

Class News...

A big WOW! goes to our very own LAUREN ABLASHI for singing the National Anthem on the news  this morning!  What an amazing voice Lauren has!

Our field trip to see "The One and Only Ivan" is coming up in a few weeks.  February 8th is the day our class will be going. Parents are welcome to follow us there and enjoy the show with us!

Remind your child to be prepared for the upcoming MARKET DAY on February 17th.  This project is a huge part of our economics unit. Please allow your child to be solely responsible for making his/her "booth" and the items or services to sell.  The kid-generated items are what we love to see! Pinterest Moms...BACK AWAY from the project.

Don't forget to send in a wrapped new chapter book (at least 150 pages, at least a Lexile of 600) with your child on or before Valentine's Day.  Please put your child's name on the outside so we know who to thank!  Your child may also bring in traditional valentines to give out.
