February 10, 2017

We had a great week and got to enjoy an amazing performance of "The One and Only Ivan." I'm sure your child came home talking all about the play we saw. It was fabulous and really brought the book to life for us.  If you get a chance, check out other performances at the Synchronicity Theater.  Check out below to see what else we've done...

Phonics/Grammar: We continued our discussion of adjectives and adverbs and the words that they modify.  Our spelling pattern consisted of two syllable words with more complex vowel patterns.

Reading: We read up to chapter 15 in Because of Winn Dixie and looked closely at the secondary characters and how they relate and influence our main character. We identified three types of secondary characters; challenger, sidekick, advisor. We also read two similar passages and learned how to analyze a constructed response question and answer it correctly (MILESTONE PREP!)

Writing:  We continued our persuasive genre of writing. We learned how to write bold beginnings that state our opinion on a topic. We learned how to collect and organize information in a way that helps the reader see our point of view.  We began a new opinion piece on which animal makes a better pet; a cat or a dog.

Math:  We learned how to measure objects to the nearest quarter inch. We also learned how to use these measurements to create line plots displaying our data. We reviewed multiplication strategies for larger numbers (using the distributive property).

Science: We began learning about Conservation and  how we can be responsible citizens living on earth.

Class News  and Announcements...

Thank you, Mrs. Bergman, for chaperoning our field trip this week!

Thank you, Mrs. Abrams, for sending in extra snacks for our field trip day!

Please send in your child's wrapped chapter  book on or before Tuesday!  We are doing our book swap with a fun story and I don't want anyone left out!

Valentines can be sent in on Tuesday as well. I will provide a holder for the kids.

Next Friday is MARKET DAY!  All materials will need to be prepared at home. This includes the tri-fold or poster that will be used for the "store", an open and closed sign, and any materials needed for the setting up the store (tape, paperclips, etc.)  We will not need parent volunteers for this event. The children really enjoy the independence and full ownership of this special day.

We  only have one  more week until Winter Break! Enjoy the extra time with your family beginning February 18th!
