March 10, 2017 Update...

Hi Visitors! We had an amazing week. I  am beginning to see 4th grade behavior and work!  I'm proud of the determination and self control I've seen this week. See below to find out what's been happening in room 315...

Grammar:  We reviewed the four parts of speech; verbs, nouns, adverbs, and adjectives. I know this is a hard skill. The best way to help your child is to get him/her to first identify all the nouns. Then it is easy to find the adjectives because they describe the nouns. Then get your child to find all the verbs.  Now locating the adverbs is easy because they are either before or after the verb and usually end  in -ly.  We did lots of practice with this and took our test on Friday. Check out your child's agenda for this paper.

Reading: We focused on using context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words. We did a silly activity with made up words, forcing us to use the clues to determine the meaning.  Then we showed our mastery on Friday with a test. In reading, we also read in our book club books and met to discuss characters, plot, and theme of our stories.

Writing:  We focused our writing on opinion writing related to multiple passages. We read two articles on guinea pigs then wrote an opinion paper on why we think these animals would make good apartment pets.  We learned how to organize our reasons and evidence, hook the reader with a strong introduction, and write a closing that leaves an impression on our reader.  We also focused heavily on conventions; capitalization, punctuation, grammar, spelling..

Math: We learned how to calculate the elapsed time when given the starting and ending times of events. We also learned how to show either the starting or ending time when given the elapsed time. We learned two methods; making  a chart and using a number line.  The children are always encouraged to use what strategy works best for them.  We continued our Milestone review every day, especially focusing on fractions and finding the unknown  in multiplication and  division problems.

Social Studies: We learned about another American  Hero; Eleanor  Roosevelt. She was devoted to helping her husband during his time as president, she began the United Nations, and she wrote the Declaration of Human Rights that all countries in the UN agree to. We created a four-square organizer that showed facts about her childhood, adulthood, obstacles and contributions to our country.

Class News...

Sometime over the next few days, you will be receiving your child's latest LEXILE score. I am so impressed with the progress our students are making.  The average growth in a year is 75-150 points and we have students making 200 point jumps in just 9 weeks.  WOW!!!!

Thank you to Camden Abrams for donating two really cool games to our class that practice multiplication facts.

WAY TO GO on collecting pledges for our school.  Our class earned the most new pledges last night and we won the  SUPER COOL RECESS BAG.  But most importantly, we won bragging rights for DePriest and Reese who were ahead of us yesterday!

Third Nine Week Report  Cards will come home on March 23. If  you have any concerns, I am happy to schedule  a conference.

Boosterthon Fun Run is Thursday. Come out and cheer our team on.  We voted on our team name today; Team Wadsworth's Wicked  Warriors it is!
