March 17 Update...St. Patrick's Day Edition

G'Day Blokes!

Thank you for visiting today!  We had a great week...Lots of opportunity to show GRIT! GRIT is not giving up when the task at hand is difficult and requires us to keep at something until we figure it out. Read below to find out what we've been working  on this week in room 315...

Spelling/Grammar:  Our spelling focus was the ambiguous a sound as in pause, chalk, trough, etc.  We also learned about compound sentences and how to use them in our writing to make it more interesting by varying our sentence structure.  We learned the special punctuation needed as well as discussing the common conjunctions used to connect the two independent clauses.

Reading:  We worked on identifying an author's perspective and then deciding if we agree or disagree with this point of view.  We learned that even informational texts can be "biased" in some ways and  we need to look for clues in the writing that show us that.  We read several examples of biased and unbiased writing and compared them.

Writing:  We continued our written response work to prepare for the types of constructed and extended responses we will see on the Milestone. We talked about the important things to remember when writing a summary; an intro that includes the character and the setting and just a little bit about the main idea of the passage, the beginning, the middle, the end (always remembering the conflict and resolution), and then a closing that states the theme or something important about the main character.

Math:  We worked on solving multi-step word problems as well as solving for unknowns in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division (when can we utilize the inverse operation). IXL math practice is a great way to prepare additionally for the Milestone.  If you notice a weakness in a math area, have your child hop on IXL and find that skill  to practice!

Content:  We learned about Pollution and Conservation!

Class News and Announcements....

Thank you to all who supported our school by pledging money for our Boosterthon! The kids were so excited to help our library transformation and also to feed needy families. Our class alone was responsible for sending 6 meals to families. Way to go!  If you haven't done so yet, please go on to funrun.com to send in your pledges and encourage any friends or relatives to do the same.

We raised $80 per lap, earning EVERY class prize!  I will be buying the class pizza next week!  Also be on the lookout in your child's agenda for other special days we will be having  in the coming weeks; tech hour, no writing day, etc.

Congratulations to our Terrific Kid this month, Charlie Collins!  Way to be an example of showing tolerance to peers.

Field Day will be here before we know it. Order your child's t-shirt before March 30th!  Our class color is charcoal.  Envelopes and order forms went home on Wednesday. Please let me know if you need another.

Calling all DADS!  Speaking of field day, this is a great opportunity for some dads to volunteer and run our field day stations with the kids. I have found that this day filled with some healthy competition is a great way for dads to get involved at Kemp. I'd love to have at least two dads volunteer to move from station to station with our class...This will NOT be the volunteers that PE asks for.  Of course, if you are interested in running one station for PE that all the classes will rotate through, that is an option as well. Let me know if you are interested...(or, MOMS, if you are volunteering your husband, let me know.)

Thank you, Mrs. Bergman, for sending in a special treat on Friday!

Thank you to all those who volunteered to donate test day treats!
