Hi Parents,
We are down to two and a half weeks of school left! This year has flown by. Check out below to see what we've been working on this week. Don't forget to read the Class News and Announcements for important reminders!
Reading: We read several more chapters in The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. We are looking at how the main character has changed throughout this story, how the secondary characters have impacted the main character, and how the author has used symbolism throughout. We completed two constructed response questions. We also created a chart in our reading notebook, looking at how Edward's outward appearance has changed with his character traits transforming. We worked in small groups on passages at a challenging Lexile level to really improve that vocabulary as well as practice our skill of using context clues to help us determine the meaning of words. We did several "close readings" on Edward Tulane as well to learn new vocabulary words.
Math: We completed our unit on partitioning shapes and took the Touchstone Assessment. We began our review of two step word problems involving all of the operations. We will continue our practice with this next week, then take our final Math Quarter 4 Touchstone Assessment. We have had so much fun during multiplication boot camp! We've been playing games every day to practice building speed with our single digit facts. We created a soldier and we are adding camo pieces based on our time on our fluency math sheets. We are taking a 100 problem quiz every day and charting our progress. Our class goal is to have everyone finishing the quiz in 5 minutes or less. Ask your child what his/her best time has been so far. We have one more week of boot camp.
Writing: We are looking at various versions of fairy tales and folk tales in order to prepare for our final writing unit, writing our own fractured fairy tale. A fractured fairy tale is a different version from the classic. I can't wait to see the creativity!
Content: We are working on our wax museum posters and speeches. We have also gathered our research from various sources, printed pictures, made time lines, and found famous quotes.
Class News and Announcements...
Field Day is Wednesday! Please remember to send a dry change of clothes in a plastic bag, a beach towel, and a water bottle. Also, apply sunscreen to your child BEFORE school. You may send the sunscreen with your child if he/she is likely to burn. Tug of war will be starting at 1:00, so come out and watch the event. Also, if you would like to join us for any other events that day, please stop by. We will begin at 8:25 and finish up around 11:15.
Yearbook Signing is ALSO Wednesday! Please have your child bring back his/her yearbook on Wednesday, May 10. The entire third grade will be going to the bus port to sign each others' books. If your child did not get a yearbook, we will provide an autograph book for those students.
Don't forget to be helping your child prepare for the wax museum. The only thing that needs to be done at home is to create a costume...be creative! Props are also encouraged! I can't wait to see these little historical figures! Come see us on Tuesday, May 16th at 9:00! We'll be in the media center!
I will not be at school on Thursday of this week. Kemp is having their leadership team meeting that I will be at. Please make sure to go through the front office, not email, if you have a dismissal change.
Our CLASS PARTY is Wednesday, May 17th right here at Kemp. Meet at the red pavilion by the garden for our picnic style dinner and then we will head to the field for KICK BALL!
