Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! I hope you have a wonderful holiday with your family next week. We've had an exciting week in Room 315. We were math movie stars on Tuesday, we completely filled our Marble Jar and had lunch in the room with a movie to celebrate our AMAZINGNESS, and we were one of the first classes to earn a party for our excellent behavior in PE. This week in your child's folder, I have put two VERY IMPORTANT notes about some special activities we'll be doing during the holidays. Both involve a little bit of shopping on your end, so I wanted to get these papers to you before the break next week. Please let me know if you have any questions. Check out below to see what else we've been doing in our room this week...
Reading: We discussed the plot in The One and Only Ivan, focusing on the rising action in the story. We looked closely at several characters in the story and used evidence when giving these characters' traits to define them. We practiced writing good, detailed summaries of several chapters in the book. We also discussed strategies good readers use when determining the main idea in an informational article or passage; look at the title, focus on the topic sentences in the article (usually the first sentence of each paragraph), pay close attention to the last sentence, read key vocabulary. We practiced identifying the main idea in several informational passages. We also read in our book club selections.
Writing: We continued to organize and revise our informational chapter books.
Math: We learned how to use basic facts to help us when multiplying with multiples of 10, 100, and 1000. We worked through four Conceptua lessons independently and we look two assessments on this skill. We also played games and worked with a partner to practice the current math facts that we are working on memorizing. We worked in small guided groups on solving math tasks that involve multiple steps.
Social Studies: We researched Henry Hudson and Jacques Cartier and learned about their expeditions to the New World. We created mini-books and showed their routes on a map. We also created a timeline of New World discoveries.
Class News and Events...
Congratulations to Audrey Tanchez for earning our class Terrific Kid award for consistently showing responsibility.
PLEASE make sure your child is studying multiplication facts on a NIGHTLY basis. The time your child is devoting to this is evident when testing time rolls around each Friday.
Mark your calendars for December 18th at 10:50! All are welcome to join in our Holiday Party! Mrs. Newlin will be sending out details shortly.
Don't forget during this busy season to remind your child to work on his/her Market Day store!
