Hi Parents and Students! Thanks for checking out the latest blog post. We have had an amazing week, full of some serious LEARNING! Check out what we've done in each core content area...
Spelling/Grammar: We practiced two-syllable words and the spelling patterns associated with these words. We worked on identifying run-on sentences and correcting them.
Writing: We began the process of turning our rough drafts into published copies for our informational books. We also began adding nonfiction text features to our books to help the reader further understand our topics.
Reading: We discussed symbolism in the book The One and Only Ivan. We talked about the deeper meaning within the book (theme). We used details from the book to discuss friendship and loyalty. We also practiced our first extended writing response together(in preparation for the Milestone). We then completed one independently. We continued our work with identifying main idea of short nonfiction passages, especially when given multiple choice style answers. Believe it or not, these types of test questions can be trickier than short answer questions. We have focused on using good reading strategies to identify the main idea; look at the title for clues, read the topic sentence, look at important vocabulary that occurs over and over, then cover the answer choices and formulate our own response and find the answer choice that most closely matches.
Math: We began our unit on Area. We learned how closely area is related to multiplication. We learned the formula; length x width = Area. We discussed ways to calculate the area of a rectilinear shape. We also learned how to find the length of an unknown side when given the total area and one side length.
Content: We learned about all six of our European Explorers. We discussed which country they were exploring for, what they were looking for, and what they actually discovered. We created a map of their routes as well. We made a big foldable book containing all of the information we have learned so far.

Our class holiday party is December 18. There is no better way to get in the holiday spirit than spend a day with eight and nine year olds partying! Come join us if you can.
It is important to keep a consistent schedule of nightly reading and math fact practice during the holidays. Third graders don't have any time to waste when it comes to these skills. We are halfway through the year and the Milestone will be here before we know it. We are working hard here during the day, but practice at home is also essential!
