January 5, 2018 Update...

Welcome to 2018!  I'm glad you chose to start off 2018 with a visit to our class blog.  For a two-day week, we were very productive!  We did one very important thing in Reading this week; we looked at our progress up to this point in the year and then created a goal and a plan to get there.  One step in that direction is completing the assigned reading homework. Please check in with your child and make sure they are completing the NIGHTLY reading assignment. Check out below to find  out what else we did this week...

Phonics/Grammar:  We began daily paragraph editing to practice application of correct conventions.

Reading:  We began an author study on Patricia Polacco. We read two of her stories; When Lightning Comes in a Jar and The Keeping Quilt. We compared the themes in the two stories. We also wrote about the plot of each story.  We watched a short video explaining theme and how to identify it.  We made a mini-book of common themes found in children's narratives and discussed each one.  We met in small groups and worked with leveled passages.  We learned how to do a "first read" and a "second read" of an article to gain understanding.

Math:  We took our Touchstone county assessments on graphing and on multiplication and division word problems. Then, we began our unit on Fractions.  We created a chart with all the basic information we need to know about fractions; the names of the parts (numerator, denominator), the definition of each part, and how to read fractions correctly.  We labeled and cut apart our own fraction manipulatives.  We learned how to identify fractions on a number line. We played with our manipulative to find equivalent fractions.

Science:  We began our unit on Pollution and Conservation. We watched an introductory video on the topic and then we read an article titled "Water Worries" and identified the main idea and important details.

Class News and Announcements...

Report Cards are coming home today!  Please sign the outside of the white envelope on the line marked "quarter 2 signature" and return with your child on Monday. Keep the report card, the blue comments page, and the article on preparing your 21st century student for the world.  If your child is in Target, Mrs. Okraski also sent home her report card today.

Target will resume next week. We have a new day; Thursday. If your child is in Target, please refer to the informational letter that is coming home today for more information about the rest of the year.

Reading homework is due Tuesday!  I'd like to see 100%  of the class turn in  this homework!  Parent signature is required each night.

Please try to send in our next read aloud, Because of Winn- Dixie, by Wednesday!
