Hi Parents,
I can't believe we only have one more week until Spring Break! Didn't we just have a break? This also means that we have one more full week of learning before the Milestones Assessment. It is very important that your child is not only completing the homework assignments, but doing them intentionally and giving 100% effort. Some of the scores I've been seeing are less than satisfactory. If you notice your child having difficulty, this is a great opportunity for you to provide extra support at home and be involved in your child's learning. The assessment is very fair and only covers topics we've learned this year, but we have learned a whole lot this year! Check out below to find out what we've been doing this week in class...
Grammar: We looked closely at comma usage specifically in dates and addresses. We also learned about subject/verb agreement and how to identify singular subjects and verbs and plural subjects and verbs. A great way to help your child learn this and be able to identify correct subject/verb agreement is to emphasize correct speech. If your child is saying something incorrectly, correct them and tell the right way to say something. This will transfer over into writing.
Reading: We have learned how to identify main ideas in informational passages by looking closely at the title and the beginning and ending sentences of articles. We have also practiced predicting test questions while reading passages. We learned to identify "whole text" versus "detail" type questions and what strategies to use to answer both types.
Writing: We learned how to write a main idea paragraph with supporting details. We also practiced writing a narrative extended response after reading a story. Please check out this great work coming home in your child's folder. We've scored several pieces based on the rubric that the Milestone writing will be assessed with. This will give you a great idea on how your child will do.
Math: We learned how to tell time to the hour and minute, as well as how to calculate elapsed time using a number line. We played several games to practice this skill.
Class News and Announcements...
Sophie Capes is on our Kemp Wall of Fame! Way to go Sophie! You have shown some noteworthy character traits this year and should be proud of the student you are!
Field Day t-shirt order forms and $$ are due! Please complete the form and return the payment envelope next week if you haven't done so already.
I will be sending home a test prep packet over spring break. Please encourage your child to complete this. I don't want to see any regression of skills over spring break.
Thank you Mrs. Newlin for filling up our candy basket! If you would like to donate any items to the class, we are in need of prize box items. They don't need to be new; one man's trash is another man's treasure!
