April 22, 2018 Update

Hi Parents,

Thank you for visiting today!  We had an amazing week and we are so happy to be finished with our Milestones Assessment.  We celebrated on Friday with a pizza party. We gathered on the lower field with all of the other third grade classes, ate, played games, and had fun!  Check out below to see what else we've done this week...

Reading:  We began our new chapter book read aloud, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.  If you purchased this book for your child, please send it to school on Monday.  We also read over several classic fairy tales and then compared these to the "adapted" version of the same fairy tale.  We are looking at the common elements in fairy tales in preparation for writing our own adapted fairy tales.

Writing:  We began thinking about which fairy tales we are most familiar with. After reading several, we chose one and rewrote the most important parts. Next week, we will begin planning how we will adapt a classic fairy tale and make it our own.

Math:  We worked all week on multi-step word problems with all four operations.  Post-tests came home on Friday.

Science:  We began our unit on Sources of Heat.  We created a tri-fold with information on the sources of heat. We also worked with a partner to read a passage and answer questions.  We watched "Bill Nye; The Science Guy" on Heat and discussed conductors and insulators of heat.

Class News...

As of right now per CCSD, any third grade student not passing any ELA portion of the Milestones will be retested on May 18th.  More information will be coming out soon.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our testing goodies!  The kids were excited and looked forward to receiving their treat each day.

The four and a half week mark for the 4th quarter was last week. Any student in danger of receiving a "1" on the final report card will get an academic alert next week.  If you do not receive an alert, your child is progressing or meeting all 4th quarter standards.

It has come to my attention that some inappropriate  language has been used by students in our class on multiple occasions. I've handled the specific incidences that I was made aware of, but it may be a good time to have a conversation with your child about what is appropriate and not appropriate language for any child. This is a great opportunity to review what it means to be respectful of other classmates as well as of yourself.  We've had several class discussions on this topic, but your reiteration at home is always helpful.

Our field day will be here before we know it!  Third grade's field day is Wednesday, May 2nd.  I'd love to get several parents who would be interested in leading the two "teams" that will be made up of the kids in our class.  It's a fun day and a great activity for dads to get involved in as well.  We'll begin around 8:00 and finish by noon.  Let me know if you are available!
