Hi Parents,
We have had an amazing week. We did a great job raising money for our school during the Boosterthon fundraiser. We are working very hard to review everything we've learned this year and make sure we can analyze constructed and extended responses and answer correctly. We practiced the Milestones Assessment on the laptops this week and will continue to do so until testing begins. Check out what else we've done this week...
Grammar: We made a grammar book and reviewed nouns and verbs. We made an anchor chart for each part of speech. We also watched several study jams videos to help us review.
Reading: We read multiple texts on one topic and wrote constructed responses incorporating information from both articles. We met in our book clubs to discuss the latest chapters. We also began a new read aloud chapter book (Your child will not need this book. I'll just be reading it to the students). We will be discussing new vocabulary words and phrases and learning how to decode using text clues. We also learned about author's point of view and how writers can give us clues as to their opinions even when the genre is informational. We looked for strong words and phrases embedded within an article that help us determine the author's feelings, then we learned how to construct our own point of view based on what we've read.
Writing: We combined reading and writing this week, practicing all of our constructed responses.
Math: We began our unit on 2-D shapes in geometry; specifically quadrilaterals and their characteristics. We learned how to compare and contrast shapes using side lengths and angles. We discussed squares, rectangles, rhombuses, trapezoids, and parallelograms. We learned about right angles and parallel lines. We also discussed how to eliminate answers when answering multiple choice questions based on our math knowledge. This strategy can help us narrow down our choices when unsure of an answer.
Class News and Announcements...
All Boosterthon money is due no later than Monday. Please make sure your child has collected all pledges by then.
Because our class came in first place in our grade, I promised them no homework once testing begins. I'm proud of how they raised money for our school. I'll let you know as soon as the "no homework" goes into effect.
I would encourage you to remind your child to go on IXL and review skills that may be a trouble area before testing begins.
Congratulations to Wyatt Newsome for being chosen as our Terrific Kid this month! Way to be an example to your classmates, Wyatt!
The end of the quarter was Friday. Report cards will be released this coming Friday. If you have trouble logging into Synergy to view your child's grades, please contact Billy Pritz. Teachers do not have login information for our students.
If you have questions regarding your child's report card, please let me know. There should be no surprises! Academic Alerts came out at the mid-quarter point for those in danger of receiving 1's and I've been sending home lots of graded work.
Spring Break is the week of April 1-5.
