May 3, 2019 Update...

Hi Parents,

We had a productive week!  Please keep our class in mind for the STEM supplies  needed for the final activity.  Thank you Mrs. Crumbley and Mrs. Newsome for the boxes of goodies already sent in!  Also, we are collecting books through next Friday morning for the Kemp Book Swap.  Your child may donate as many chapter books as he/she wants, but there will be a limit of 3 for taking.  The swap will be Friday, May 10th.

Check out below to see what we've been doing in class.

Reading:  We worked on decoding challenging vocabulary words and phrases in our chapter book, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. We read several chapters with a partner, and several chapters independently, looking for vocabulary words to add to our list of challenging words.  We talked about the important symbolism in the book and what connections we can  make in our own personal lives to the events in the book. We learned that when authors put recurring events, phrases, or objects in a story, we need to pay special attention to that part.  We also read three Georgia Weekly Studies articles and summarized by writing a paragraph.

Math:  We reviewed comparing and contrasting geometry shapes by their attributes and completed several constructed responses.  We also reviewed the steps for solving two-step word problems and strategies that can help us connect the word problem events to math equations.

Social Studies:  We began our unit on the colonies.  We have learned about the New England colonies and the Middle colonies.  We read about colonial life, the problems the colonists faced, and what led to the Revolutionary War.

Writing:  We studied several fractured fairy tales and looked at how the authors used original details and details from the classics to create stories. We talked about how one small change, like the setting, can lead to other big changes all throughout the story.  We chose our fairy tale to fracture, we wrote the important events from the classic version and then wrote the corresponding fractured event.  We began writing our final drafts and will continue with this next week.

Class News...

Remember to continue to have talks with your child about respectful and responsible behavior through the end of the year. It can be easy at this exciting time to let impulsive decisions get the best of us, but we do still have two and a half weeks left and we will be making the most of our time academically.

It's time to amp up the math fact practice!  Now is when those facts need to be mastered. The fourth grade teachers expect this and it is a third grade standard to know all facts from memory at this point in the year.  Ten minutes a night is all it should take to master these facts.

Tanner's Totes is a fundraiser that Target students are heading up. Check out the Kemp website for more information on  ways you can help!
