Hi Parents,

Thanks for visiting the blog today! Congratulations to Ella Mills for being chosen as this quarter's Wall of Famer!  And congratulations to Zoe Proctor for being chosen as this month's Terrific Kid for consistently showing integrity.  Check out below to see what we've been doing in class this week...

Phonics/Grammar: We learned the -ce and -se ending spelling pattern. We also began our study of verbs and reviewed how to generate them and identify them. Next week, we'll begin working with verb tenses.

Reading:  We continued our study of nonfiction texts, reading from our Gorillas book.  We learned how to created "boxes and bullets" to identify the main idea and key details in a paragraph. We also practiced looking for "pop-out" words and phrases to help us identify the main idea of a passage.  We worked with a partner to  generate our own headings based on the pop-out sentences we found. We also began our chapter book, The Kid in the Red Jacket and read together and independently, with a partner, and in whole group. We looked at the feelings and motivations of the main character of our book and how he is changing and developing throughout the story.

Math:  We learned how to use the Distributive Property to multiply larger numbers. We also learned how to use the Associative Property of Multiplication when finding the product for three numbers.  We worked in whole group, small group, and with partners to practice these new strategies.  We reviewed some basic 2nd grade skills that have been causing most in our class some trouble, and created a resource page in our math notebook to refer back to when completing morning work pages where we are reviewing these skills.

Science: We learned about the types of pollution and what we can do in order to reduce, reuse and recycle with a goal of improving our planet. We enjoyed learning about this topic at our Cobb County Parks and Rec field trip.

Class News and Announcements...

Thank you to Mrs. Gifford and Mr. McClure for chaperoning this field trip!  It was great!

Remember to encourage Read Theory at least a few times a week as your child's reading time.  This will reinforce skills needed that will be useful in preparation for the Milestones.  Make sure your child is getting a passing score of 85% or higher when taking these quizzes.  The students should be reading the story twice if it is a narrative passage, or stopping and taking notes if the passage is informational.  These are the strategies we've learned in class and need to be practiced at home.
