January 17, 2020 Update

Hi Parents!

I am so proud of the class for the work on the homework packets this week!  Every single student turned it in on Friday.  Don't forget Monday is a holiday in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  I look forward to seeing everyone back here on Tuesday. Check out what we've done this week in class...

Spelling/Grammar: We learned about comparative and superlative adjectives and the rules that accompany these words.  We also practiced spelling two-syllable words that end in -er.  We took our spelling quiz on Friday.

Reading: We began our next read aloud, Because of Winn-Dixie. We completed several close readings to help us determine the meaning of more challenging vocabulary words.  We practiced our oral reading skills with a partner and read several chapters together.  We also learned about cause and effect relationships when reading and practiced identifying each in a passage on the Titanic.  We worked in small groups, targeting in-depth comprehension strategies and inferring meaning based on our background knowledge and information given in the passage.

Writing: We began our unit on Persuasive Writing by learning about the power our words can have in order to influence people.  We wrote a short speech on why our class needs more laptops in partner groups, we brainstormed ideas on what topics would make good opinion writing pieces, and we chose a meaningful topic to begin a second speech on.

Math: We jumped into learning about unit fractions (identifying each part of a fraction), ordering fractions, and comparing fractions.  We also worked on mastering our x7 and x8 multiplications facts.  We spent some time reviewing subtraction with regrouping as well.

Science: We learned about the regions of Georgia through an interactive and hands on program by the Cobb County Parks and Recreation.

Class News and Announcements...

No school Monday!

A new homework packet will be coming home on Tuesday. With the shortened week, we won't have spelling words, but please encourage your child to work on his/her multiplication facts. We will have a timed quiz on Friday. At this point, the students are on different sets of facts based on mastery, so please make sure you check your child's quiz in order to determine if he/she has moved on.

Please make sure to return the Tattletales permission slip and donation if you haven't done so already.

Don't forget to encourage your child to utilize the website suggestions at the bottom of the blog.  There is a great one for practicing multiplication facts and Read Theory is perfect for Milestones test prep!
