January 10th Update...

I am so glad to be back in the swing of things!  We are hitting the ground running in 2020 and the kids have had an amazing week. I have seen lots of focus and hard work, now that SANTA is no longer on the brain.  Check out below to see what we've been doing this week in class...

Spelling:  We focused on two-syllable words with short vowels in the first syllable and long vowels in the first syllable and the spelling pattern that accompanied this.  We look our quiz on Friday.

Math: We learned how to find the perimeter of a shape and compared this to finding the area of a shape.  We created anchor charts in our math notebooks to help us calculate perimeter.  We then began our unit on fractions.  We also created a fraction anchor chart in our math notebooks, we completed several hands-on activities with manipulatives in order to better understand fractions, and we played a "fraction fling" game.  The game is now on this blog at the bottom of the page if your child would like to play.  I also included a parent resource in the "Mrs. Wadsworth's Favorite Websites" section to help you when working with your child on fractions. Take a minute to check it out if you have time!

Reading: We finished reading our chapter book read aloud, The One and Only Ivan.  We worked with several passages, practicing our UNWRAP comprehension strategy to help prepare for the Milestones.  UNWRAP stands for Underline the title, Number the paragraphs, Walk through the questions before reading, Read the passage, Answer the questions, and Prove your answers with evidence.  Each child has a bookmark with this strategy on it and I am continually reinforcing this in the classroom.  I am going to be sending home comprehension passages in the coming weeks, and it would be helpful if you would reinforce the use of this strategy so it becomes a habit before we begin testing. Also, don't forget about ReadTheory!  I love to see students taking the initiative to work on this as home, even when it is not assigned.

Class News and Announcements:

Our next chapter book will be Because of Winn Dixie. Please purchase a copy for your child is you are able. We will begin next week.

We will have a student teacher from KSU joining us on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays beginning this Monday. Her name is Ms. Elliott and we are lucky to have her in our classroom! Be on the lookout for an introduction letter from her next week.

Congratulations to Jaleigh Parish for being chosen as an example to her peers for the Terrific Kid award for Compassion!

Homework is going to increase in the coming weeks!  Please allow time for your child to complete this important work, which will be reinforcing and practicing the skills we are learning in class.

I was very impressed with the memorization of x7 facts this week!  Your child is bringing home the quiz we took on Friday.  If your child passed the assessment, the "move on to x8's" will be circled on the quiz. If your child needs an additional week to practice x7's, then that will also be indicated on the quiz. This rainy weekend will be a great time to jump on some practice time!!! The "Math Facts" website located on this blog is a great resource for your child to use!

As you are cleaning out your child's room to make space for all those new Christmas toys, keep us in mind for any items you are getting rid of.  We are always taking donations for our Friday Prize Box!  Used items are welcomed!

Monday, January 21 is a school holiday in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

If you haven't done so, don't forget to look at your child's report card in ParentVue!
