April 21 Update...

Only TWO days of MATH testing to go!  Read below to see what we've been doing this week in class...

ELA: We reviewed the important components of all types of writing on the Milestones; opinion, narrative, and informational. We wrote several responses together and discussed the "must haves" in order to get a "4" on the assessment. We also discussed how to correctly analyze a writing prompt to make sure we are answering the question asked through our writing.  We reviewed the UNWRAP strategy, which reinforces good comprehension tips and tricks to help us find the correct response to a multiple choice question.  We added to our grammar review book in order to help us remember capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and grammar rules.

Math:  We looked further at fractions, focusing on finding equivalent fractions on a number line and comparing fractions with models and on a number line.  We revisited the steps for finding elapsed time.  We completed a packet of standards-based math questions, mostly focusing on how to answer a constructed response question that calls for a solution, a model, and an explanation.  We then looked at the properties of multiplication and division and made sure we can explain the various properties and how this can help us apply strategies to equations (Associative, Commutative, Distributive).

Writing:  We created the cutest Hipster Bunnies and began writing creative Easter Bunny stories.  You will have a chance to read all of our great pieces at the end of the year AUTHORS' BREAKFAST. Mark you calendars for May 20th to come in and celebrate the amazing writing we've done this year. More details will be coming home this week.

Reading:  We are almost finished with Horns and Wrinkles. This has been a great book with a complex plot and lots of figurative language.  We will begin The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane this week. If you have not yet sent this book in, please do so on Monday.  If you haven't purchased it, I have extra copies your child can borrow.

Class News...

Thank  you for the cards, texts,  and emails about my recent accomplishment of getting chosen by my colleagues as Teacher of the Year for 2019-2020.  It has been an amazing year with AMAZING students, making this even more special.

As you prepare for the end of the school year, please make sure to update your calendar with the special days listed to the side of this blog post.

We are celebrating an amazing year and the END of testing this Friday with a special day called DIFFENDOOFER DAY! We will be providing pizza and juice for the kids and will join together on the field for an afternoon of fun and celebration.

Field Day is coming up soon. I would love for a couple of parents to volunteer to lead our class in the events of the day.  I need two (or more) parents who would be willing to join us from 8:00 until 11:15  as we travel from station to station.  You will be in charge of building up morale and encouraging good sportsmanship.  This is a great opportunity for DADS to join us for the first half of the day. If you are interested, please email me. This is not the same as volunteering for the PE teachers.  This will be specifically staying with and leading our class throughout the morning.  This will free me up to take pictures, deal with any injuries, and keep classroom management in check ;)
